What is the HEIC format?

HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) is the default photo format used by iPhones and iPads since iOS 11. It stores photos at roughly half the file size of JPEG at similar quality, but many Windows PCs, older Android phones, and web apps can't open it. Converting HEIC to PNG or JPG makes those photos usable everywhere.
